Plague Inc. offers two distinct modes, challenging players with diverse game missions.

The first mode, the classic one, allows the player to assume the role of a pathogen spreader, with the ultimate goal of infecting and wiping out the entire human race!

Upon entering the game, the player selects a bacterium and gives it a suitable name. A choice of genes is made, and then the game officially begins. A world map, displaying different geographical distributions and population densities, greets the player. A target country is chosen for the initial outbreak, and the germ spreading begins. Densely populated areas facilitate faster infection rates. As the infection takes hold, the number of infected individuals rises, represented by red dots on the map. Additional epidemic symbols and yellow gene bars appear, granting gene points for evolving and enhancing the germs' effectiveness.

Evolving the infection pathway enhances the germ's spreading ability. Players must strategically choose which abilities to upgrade based on the current infected countries. The symptoms range from mild to severe, with higher lethality scores leading to increased fatality rates. However, excessive lethality can result in the loss of carriers, hampering the spread.

Each bacterium boasts a unique gameplay style, and different plague types exhibit distinct spreading mechanisms. As the epidemic grows, governments will initiate antidote development efforts, necessitating swift action to circumvent these countermeasures.
