Description

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is a video game that's based on the Nickelodeon animated series of the same name. It was jointly developed by Heavy Iron Studios, AWE Games, and Vicarious Visions, and later published by THQ. The game was initially released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube consoles, along with separate versions compatible with Microsoft Windows and Game Boy Advance.

All editions of the game follow an original storyline where the player, playing as SpongeBob, attempts to defend Bikini Bottom from an invasion of robots created by Plankton using a machine called the Duplicatotron 3000. Patrick and Sandy are also playable characters in the console versions. Most of the original voice actors reprise their roles, with Joe Whyte voicing Mr. Krabs and Mermaid Man instead of Clancy Brown and Ernest Borgnine.

Battle for Bikini Bottom received mixed to average reviews according to Metacritic. Despite this, it was a commercial success and has since gained a cult following, especially within the speedrunning community. The Game Boy Advance version was even included in Edge's list of top handheld video games of the 21st century.

A remake titled SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated was released on June 23, 2020. This version was developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. It includes a multiplayer mode and previously unreleased content from the original game.

The original console versions of the game were presented as 3D platformers, whereas the Microsoft Windows version compiled various mini-games. On the other hand, the Game Boy Advance edition offered a 2D platforming experience.

The game was first released in North America on October 31, 2003, and later in Europe on November 28, 2003.

Side Information

The game, a 3D platformer, revolves around collecting various items and defeating robots attacking different areas of Bikini Bottom. Players traverse platforms and dodge hazards like spikes and flames. Each character has unique abilities, necessary to overcome challenges in specific areas. SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick, and Sandy are playable characters.

In the console version, players can switch characters at bus stops. Switching once replaces the current character with another, and switching again brings back the previous character. This allows players to choose two characters per level. SpongeBob is the default character throughout the game, while Sandy and Patrick do not share levels as playable characters.

Three main types of items are collectible. "Shiny Objects" serve as currency, usable for passes or buying gold shovels from Mr. Krabs. "Golden Spatulas" unlock new areas and are hidden throughout. Completing tasks set by characters like Squidward Tentacles or others in the cartoon also grants them. Patrick's "socks" are scattered across the game, and he rewards SpongeBob with a gold shovel for 10 socks. SpongeBob can blow bubbles into shapes for special attacks/actions, learning new ones as the game progresses.

Props aid players in the game. Trampolines help bounce to ledges or platforms, buttons activate things, and pressure pads work like buttons but only when stood on or with an object placed on them. Character-specific abilities include Sandy's swinging from a Texas hook, SpongeBob's diving with a bungee hook, and Patrick's throwing melons ("throw fruit") and ice cubes ("freeze fruit"). Unique abilities allow navigation in certain areas only accessible to specific characters. SpongeBob can create a bubble helmet for head-butting, Patrick can throw objects at buttons, robots, and pressure pads, and freeze slime bodies with "frozen fruit". Sandy can slide through gaps and destroy enemies and objects with her lasso.
