Players need to capture Pokémon and train them in the game world. The map of the game world is the entire globe in the real world, and the base data is from developer Niantic's previous work Ingress, like the PokéStop and Gym in GO that give players free items are based on the location data of the Portal on the map of Ingress. In addition, different Pokémon are offered for different areas in the game; for example, in areas near water (lakes, shores, riverbanks), water-based Pokémon are more likely to appear than in other places. The player's movement in the game is based on the player's location in the real world. For example, the egg hatching system, which was previously only available in the canon, also makes its debut in this game, where the player can use an egg hatcher after acquiring a Pokémon egg. To hatch the Pokémon eggs provided in GO, the player needs to walk or move in reality to reach a certain distance in order to hatch successfully and obtain a new Pokémon. The Dojo in the series is also featured in this game, with different teams of players battling in the Dojo, which currently features Team Spirituality (Yellow), Team Hieiji (Blue), and Team Martial Arts (Red).
The game has been significantly simplified in many aspects compared to the series proper. For example, capturing a Pokémon in this game only requires you to throw a Poké Ball at it to capture it, rather than having to fight first and then capture it as in the canon. (Group battles are still played as in the main series, but with a time limit.) In terms of raising Pokémon, players only need to use candies of the same type of Pokémon to enhance their Pokémon's abilities, and this is also the way to evolve Pokémon in the game, rather than having to reach a certain level as in the main series. Payment for the game includes the purchase of PokéCoins to upgrade the player's own items, which can also be obtained by defending the Dojo.
